Baltimore Yearly Meeting Indian Committee Minutes, 1795-1815

Meeting for Sufferings forwarded a memorialto legislature of Ohio requesting its attentionto the subject and that it would adopt suchmeasures for the relief of the Indiansas might appear beneficial &; proper andit is with great satisfaction we can informthe Yearly Meeting, that a law was obtainedwhich intirely interdicts under heavy penaltiesthe transportation of any intoxicating liquorsout of that state for the purpose of beingVended to Indians, and also the furnishing anyto Indians who may come within thelimits of the state- We have also the satisfaction to add that we have understood thatsimilar laws have been passed in the Territories, and as it was principally from these placesthat the Indians obtained their supplies of Spiritous liquors the committee indulges thehope that they will not hereafter have tostruggle against the powerful obstacles whichthis most pernicious article has heretoforethrown in their way and which had discouragedthem from extending much assistance thepresent year, they therefore cannot but rejoicein the prospect which now opens before them
