an establishment on the Wabash river, where a numberof Indian families from the neighbouring villages removed,for the purpose of being instructed in agriculture aconsiderable quantity of ground was cleared and putinto cultivation, and most kinds of domestic animalssuch as Horses, Cattle, Hogs introduced After several Years attention at this settlement,finding that their labours became greatly interruptedand their views misrepresented by an evil disposedperson who at that time resided with the Indians, and hadacquired an extensive influence amongst them, the committee believed it right after addressing the Nativeson the occasion &; explaining fully to them the situationin which they found themselves to withdraw for a timefrom that place. Many of the Indians seemed grateful forthe assistance they had received, and although the establishment did not succeed to the extent which the committeehad anticipated, yet it is believed that some essentialadvantages have resulted to the Indians there- They havebeen brought by experience to feel the benefits of anagricultural life; &; by the introduction of Cattle &; Hogsamongst them, to the rearing of which their country ispeculiarly well adapted, their resources to obtain foodhave been increased; Many families have also beenprovided with comfortable Houses which has stimulated othersto endeavour to obtain them also and their minds havebeen generally excited to look to the cultivation of theearth for their support, and the committee apprehendthat the time is perhaps not very distant when it maybecome right to resume their labours at that place Applications having been frequently madeto the committee by the Shawanese nation of Indiansfor assistance it was concluded upon withdrawing fromthe establishment at the Wabash, to turn their attentiontowards them, a grist and saw mill have accordingly been erected in their country and implements of husbandry
