Bio notes | The Government of Massachusetts administrated the most populous state in New England and was a pivotal player in the events of the Revolutionary War. Officially became a state in 1780 after the ratification of John Adams’ state constitution. The pressure of wartime debts and late army commissions finally erupted in the populist Shay’s Rebellion (1786-1787), which convinced leaders like George Washington to strengthen the powers of the national government. In 1820, Maine separated from Massachusetts and became its own state. |
