Bio notes | Since its foundation, the religion-tolerant colony of Rhode Island was home to a sizeable Quaker population. Nicholas Easton, its onetime governor and fellow Quaker, bequeathed his house to the Newport Friends in 1676. They constructed a new meetinghouse in 1699, and expanded in 1705 and 1729 to accommodate the women’s meeting. Newport’s Quaker population dwindled after the Revolutionary War. |
