Bio notes | Since the early 18th century, Rhode Island was a haven for Quakers. The Woonsocket region in particular had a large population that informally gathered for worship and had bought burial land in 1713. It was not until 1719 that they built a significant Meeting House, however, and in the same year the resident Quakers established the Providence Monthly Meeting. This changed its name to Smithfield Monthly Meeting in 1737, owing to the fact that most of Northern Rhode Island was referred to by this name. Then, in 1783 part of the Smithfield monthly meeting split off to form a new Providence Monthly Meeting. The organization is noted for its early involvement in abolition. |
