Bio notes |
The state legislature of North Carolina. A bicameral institution composed of both Senate and House of Representatives, both of which draft laws for the state. It first convened in 1777. After Nat Turner’s slave Rebellion in 1831, the legislature passed laws that restricted the rights of slaves and free black people, forbidding them from attending school, preaching in public, or bearing arms. In 1835, the state constitution was amended to have the governor elected directly by the people, with all other officials elected by the state legislature. |
