Bio notes | Thomas Smith was a native of Wales who came Detroit about 1776. He was a surveyor and drew the 1796 plan of Detroit and surveyed the town after the 1805 fire. Smith was a man of education, a merchant, and in the summer of 1788 was appointed clerk of the Court of Common Pleas. He remained a British subject in 1796 and removed to Petite Cote, where he died, March 3,1833, aged seventy-nine. |
