Evan Thomas Geo Ellicott and Joel Wright areappointed to draw an Essay of an answer to thecommunication of the committee of the Yearly Meetingof Philadelphia and produce it to our next Meeting Then adjourned to the 9 Hour tomorrow Morning3 Mo. 24, 1799 The committee met and the essay of a letterin answer to that rec. from Philadelphia beingapproved was signed &; directed to be forwardedbeing as follows To the Committee appointed by theYearly Meeting of Philadelphia to promote theCivilization of the Indians Dear FriendsThe corresponce has onour part been suspended till some Acc. shouldbe received from the Western Indians whichis now communicated to you they probablyconceiving that Friends wherever situated actas one Body united—and as Friends in Pensylv.have had a correspondence with them attimes from the first settlement of the Countryand as they in their present address have aludedto former transactions it seems the more necessaryfor us to apply to you for information onthat head—Aware of our own inability at presentto do any great matters we have endeavourd to
