Bio notes A Protestant Christian sect distinguished by the tenet that baptism should only be performed on professed believers (as opposed to infants) and by complete water immersion. Most worship congregationally, but as there is no strict church structure or creed, many different Baptist organizations formed between the 17th and 19th centuries. In 1638, Roger Williams established the first Baptist congregation in North America. Their ranks swelled after the First Great Awakening in the mid-18th century, which in turn propelled a series of Canadian Missions in the 1760s.
