Bio notes One of two houses in the lawmaking branch of the New York State government, the Senate worked closely with the State Assembly and Governor. Along with the Assembly it drafted new laws within the limits of the federal constitution, but it alone retained the right to confirm the Governor’s appointment of state officials. In 1790 the first reapportionment acts passed after census results reveal increased western population. In 1797 Albany was finally chosen as the State Capital.
