Bio notes Born in Scotland; to N. Am. as an ensign, British army; m. Phoebe Bayard, Boston (1760); resigned from army (1762); with wife's inheritance bought a 4,000 acre estate in Ligonier Valley, w. Pa. Member (1785-87), president (1787), Continental Congress; governor, Northwest Territory (1787-1802). Served in British Army during French and Indian War. Famous for 1791 defeat against Native Americans.
