Bio notes | First president of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (1827-1836); called "The Father of American Railways." Prominent member of the Society of Friends and served as chair of Indian Committee (1821-1832) and as representative to Washington for the Six Nations of Indians. Earned the title "Hai-wa-nob" (the Benevolent One) from the Swan Tribe of the Seneca People. Clerk of BYM Indian Committee, at least 1803-1813. |
